Lesson 9. Demographics, Urbanization, and Social Justice
India’s demographic dividend and its associated challenges are a key area. This involves studying population trends (growth rate, age structure, dependency ratio, sex ratio), the National Population Policy, and issues of migration (both internal and international). Urbanization is a critical sub-topic, covering challenges of urban governance, housing (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban), sanitation (Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban), transport, and smart city projects. Equally important is the theme of Social Justice, which encompasses the constitutional provisions and government schemes for the upliftment of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), minorities, women, children, and persons with disabilities. Key schemes include scholarships, hostels, development corporations, and specific acts for protection and welfare. Understanding the socio-economic data related to these groups from census and other surveys is necessary. Additional Resources: The Census of India data (though delayed, the 2011 census and associated studies remain vital), the report of the Sachar Committee, and the Justice G. Rohini Commission report on OBC sub-categorization are important. For urbanization, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs website and the “India’s Urban Awakening” report by McKinsey provide useful insights. The UN Population Division’s World Population Prospects offers long-term demographic trends.
