Lesson 2. Salient Features of the Constitution & Preamble
This chapter serves as the compass for the entire polity syllabus. A thorough understanding of the salient features—such as its length, written nature, blend of rigidity and flexibility, parliamentary system, federal structure with unitary bias, fundamental rights and duties, DPSP, secularism, and judicial review—is non-negotiable. The Preamble, often called the soul of the Constitution, is a perennial favorite. You must be able to deconstruct every keyword (‘Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, Republic, Justice, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity’), understand their judicial interpretation, and know the significance of the 42nd Amendment. The question of whether the Preamble is a part of the Constitution and its amendability under Article 368 has been tested multiple times. This chapter forms the basis for analyzing any constitutional provision or contemporary issue. Additional Resources: Landmark Supreme Court judgments like Kesavananda Bharati (basic structure) and S.R. Bommai (secularism) are essential reading summaries. The official India Year Book chapter on ‘Polity’ provides a concise overview. For visual learners, infographic charts comparing Indian features with other models (US, UK) help in retention and clarity.
